Self Help Tips
Install one scanner only!  (they don't play well together)
  • Norton Security Software (virus only, internet security & total
    system performance utilities)
  • McAfee
  • AVG (freeware is great!)
  • Freedom (available with local Cable internet service provider)
  • Check with your internet provider for their security suite as most
    will provide a nice package.


Spyware Scanner Utilities
Two or more should be installed.  These should be executed at least
once a week, daily would be better!  All of these programs are FREE!


Pop-up Blocker Utilities
These utilities stop the annoying pop-ups that can contain viruses or
spyware.  A must have utility and they are FREE!
  • Yahoo! Tool Bar with spam gaurd and pop-up blocker (as well as
    a great search engine)
  • Internet Explorer 6 in Windows XP (included in SP2)
  • Google Tool Bar
Whether you have dial-up or high speed internet, you expose your
computer to the risks of the outside world.  Spyware can steal your
personal information.  Viruses can cause a wide variety of problems
from little annoying things to a full computer crash.
